  NEBOSH National Certificate in Environmental Management

The NEBOSH National Certificate in Environmental Management is designed to provide a sound foundation in environmental management knowledge and practice.

The NEBOSH National Certificate in Environmental Management is designed for managers, supervisors and employees based in the UK, who have responsibility for managing environment issues as a part of their day-to-day work.

The NEBOSH National Certificate in Environmental Management focuses on UK environmental laws and International management systems, such as ISO 14001.

The NEBOSH National Certificate in Environmental Management syllabus covers the practical issues of managing environmental risk, taking a risk management approach based on best practices and international standards, including:

  • Environmental Management Systems and Impact Assessments
  • Sources and use of energy and energy efficiency
  • Control of pollution
  • Planning for and dealing with environmental emergencies

Entry criteria

No previous environmental knowledge is required to undertake the NEBOSH National Certificate in Environmental Management but students must be able to write short reports.

Units and elements of competence

NEBOSH does not consider that it is appropriate to divide the NEBOSH National Certificate in Environmental Management into elements of competence which could be of value individually in a work situation.

The practical examination.


Written Examination

The NEBOSH National Certificate in Environmental Management written exam paper consists of one long-answer question and ten short-answer questions. The required mark to pass the written paper is 45%.

Practical assessment

NEC2, the practical assessment, is set and marked by a suitably qualified assessor, who is appointed by the programme organiser and approved by NEBOSH, to a standard set and moderated by NEBOSH.

Candidates are required to obtain at least 60% for a pass. Candidates awarded less than 60% in NEC 2 will be referred in this part.

Course Programme

This course is available in two different programme models:

Full Time Open Programme [6 days]

The 6 day model will be held over a 1 week block, plus 1 days for examinations.

The cost of the 6 day model is £945 + VAT
